But it won't be a performance. Instead, MTV Networks Music Group President Van Toffler said Wednesday, it'll be something "fun and unexpected" on Sunday night's show.
Unexpected is probably the kindest way to describe Spears' performance at last year's VMAs. In what was heavily promoted as the troubled singer's comeback, she instead gave an unfocused, almost unwatchable performance of "Gimme More," one of the many low points in her year of debacles.
So what made Spears and MTV reunite one more time?
"MTV has long played an important role in my career. How can I not be there to kick off their 25th VMAs? I'm excited to open the entire show, to say hi to my fans and to be nominated," Spears said in a statement.
"I think for Britney, people are rooting for her, and she's really on the road to recovery," Toffler said, noting that MTV had nominated her for three VMAs, including video of the year, for her clip "Piece of Me."
"It feels like it's her year," he added. "It's our 25th anniversary of the VMAs, and she's been such a critical piece of MTV's history."
While she bombed in 2007, Spears has given the VMAs many highlights over the years, from her kiss with Madonna to her performance with a writhing snake.
Spears also equals ratings gold: Last year's VMAs were up 23 percent over the 2006 show.
In recent months, Spears, who's working on a new album, has appeared to have cleaned up her act (although a judge on Wednesday refused to dismiss a misdemeanor driving without-a-valid-license case against her). Her father James has been in control of her personal and professional matters as her legal conservator, and she drew high ratings and positive reviews when she made guest appearances on CBS' "How I Met Your Mother" earlier this year.
So far, the confirmed performers for Sunday's show include the Jonas Brothers, Lil Wayne, Rihanna, T.I. and Kid Rock.
Toffler also raised the possibility of another troubled pop icon appearing: Michael Jackson.
"We've been talking to him as well, I don't know if that's going to happen," he said. "People fall in and fall out up until the day of the show."

Britney Spears, not slated to perform on VMAs 08?

Tue Aug 26, 4:31 PM ET
LOS ANGELES - Britney Spears won't perform on this year's MTV Video Music Awards, according to her manager.
"Contrary to media reports, Britney was never slated to perform on this year's VMAs," Larry Rudolph, Spears' manager at Jive Records, said in a statement. "She's in the middle of recording her next album, which is going amazingly well, and her focus remains on the studio."
Spears' "Gimme More" comeback performance during last year's VMAs was one of the most-talked-about moments of 2007. The tabloid queen is currently appearing in spots promoting this year's ceremony.
In June, MTV Networks Music Group President Van Toffler said the network wasn't ruling out giving viewers another dose of Spears at the VMAs. MTV later confirmed they were in talks to have Spears appear in some capacity. The rebounding pop queen is nominated for video of the year for "Piece of Me."
This VMAs will air live Sept. 7 from Paramount Pictures Studios in Los Angeles. Previously announced award show performers include Kid Rock, Lil Wayne, Pink, Rihanna, Paramore, T.I. and the Jonas Brothers.

Britney Spears' 'Gimme More' 2007 MTV VMA Performance: A DISASTER

A look back on Britney’s VMA history..
In 1999, she joined N’SYNC in this very powerful number for Baby One More Time and Tearin’ Up My Heart. This was the starting point of her VMA history as to performing really, really well.
The year 2000 was her debut as a “mature” performer, for this is where she exposed her other side – her mature and sexy side. For me, the choreography done here was one of the best among all her performances. She performed (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction and Oops! I Did It Again.
Performing at the finale of the MTV VMA 2002 for the debut of her single I’m A Slave 4 U was definitely considered as one of the memorable performances there is of an artist in VMA history. This has been her best performance yet for me.
Along with other big stars namely Madonna, Missy Elliot, and Christina Aguilera, this opening act of Like A Virgin on the MTV VMA 2003 was again another memorable one. The kiss.. that kiss!
Now, again opening the VMAs this year, Britney did her comeback move with Gimme More..
But it was disappointing.
If you’ll see her growth from 1999 to last 2003’s performance, and if you’ll judge the way she nailed each of those, and upon watching this, then you will definitely agree with me.
So far, this has been the lamest, cheapest, and weakest performance of hers; from the outfit up to the dance routine, from the confidence up to the stage presence; everything was a mess – in short, disastrous.
The song was really great, but the performance was not.
I really don’t know what’s going on in Britney’s mind, but hey! I am affected! The world is affected!
Was she still upset? Was she contemplating on the remark of Sarah Silverman about her babies? Was she uncomfortable with her wig and lingerie costume?
This was not the Britney we used to love before!
I hope she comes back to her senses, and I hope she misses her used-to-be self as like we, her fans, misses it.
Ok, much has been said here. Enjoy the video/s.
